Give me produce or give me rock!

I like to think that my band doesn’t fit a lot of rock band stereotypes. While there are some “I’m in a band” boilerplates I’ve grown to accept (we will always argue about whose turn it is to buy beer, for instance), I’m particularly excited about the most recent realization of a distinctive band-habit.

Milkmachine spent Valentine’s Day weekend in the studio at American University recording five new tunes. On Sunday, after 14+ hours spent in the basement of McKinley, piles of dressing-coated Tupperware said it all: we eat a ton of salad.

How did we acquire this unquenchable yet uncoordinated taste for mixed veggies? Who knows… but if you’re into it, try out our signature salad combinations below, and stay tuned for details about our soon-to-be released five-track EP.

  • Russ (accordion): shredded red cabbage, cubed cooked acorn squash, radishes, tomatoes, carrots, avocado, salmon, shrimp
  • Jared (drums): kale, green-leaf lettuce, red bell pepper, avocado, blue cheese, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, chicken
  • Johnny (trumpet): baby spinach, tomatoes, jicama, corn, cucumbers, avocado, steak
  • Emily (tuba): mixed spring greens, cilantro, black beans, beets, butternut squash, black sesame seeds, hard boiled egg

(A salad shout-out of gratitude to Cameron, our AU sound guy. He recommends baby spinach with dried cranberries, mandarin oranges and slivered almonds.)

*CANCELED* Batcave reunion on Sunday

batcave

***Friends, The Batcave reunion has been canceled due to the crazy snow! The show will be rescheduled for a future date. Check back soon for details!*** Way back before milkmachine got going, I used to play accordion at an open mic called “The Batcave”. It was the oddest assortment of unusual performers in DC. It was always exciting and challenging to attend. Sadly, as with all wonderful things, its time ended some years ago. This Sunday, however, a reuinion is planned at the DC Arts Center on Sunday, December 20, at 7:00pm. I’ll play a few songs, and there will be music, burlesque, oddities, and more. Tickets are $10, and you must make a reservation by calling the DC Arts Center at 202-462-7833.

On Tubas: Tonight’s DC9 Goodbye

Tonight, Milkmachine is opening for Hoots & Hellmouth at DC9.
Hoots & Hellmouth are going to be a ton of fun to play with and, needless to say, we are excited about this show.

Sadly, this will be the last time Milkmachine performs with the tuba we’ve been borrowing from our friend Jeff Mitchell over the past year. He’s playing music throughout the upcoming holidays, and his practices are picking up.

What does this mean for us? On to the next tuba, and a big thank you to Jeff. If you come out tonight, please think  of how he made this show possible. (Or you can think about him playing tuba while wearing a Santa hat and suspenders. I know I am.)

Stay tuned for future tuba news, and come see us tonight at DC9, 1940 9th St NW, one block from U St. metro. Milkmachine at 9 p.m. $12.

The Red & the Black Bar, Here We Come!

The Red & the Black

You know you want to print this and hang it on your wall

In just slightly over 33 hours, we’ll be rocking our socks off at the Red & the Black Bar in Northeast! this is a special show where we’ll be playing 2 full sets since the other band that was supposed to show up flaked out (but their loss is YOUR GAIN!)

Here’s the skinny: doors open at 9pm, show starts at 9:30pm. It’s 6 American dollars to get in.

The Red and the Black bar is located at 1212 H St., NE. There’s a free shuttle from the Chinatown metro. Oh man, it’s gonna be fun!

Late thanks to Wild Fictions, Tres Bien

so, uh, yeah, we played a show at the Red & the Black like 3 weeks ago and we’re just now getting around to saying thanks to our friends and fans who came out to see us. And, of course, a super BIG thanks to Wild Fictions and Tres Bien. Both these bands are awesome, and if you haven’t checked them out yet, you should immediately stop everything that you are doing and go check them out RIGHT NOW! We’re super stoked to play with both of them again (and if anyone from Tres Bien is reading this, we’ll even come up to Philly to play!)

Don’t forget this Friday at the Velvet Lounge, with superstars American Sinner and Petticoat Tearoom. It’s worth the price of admission, which, BTW, is 8 bucks.

And Wild Fictions is playing at the Lounge on Saturday the 27th!
